Two completely separate conversations this week with business
leaders in very different organizations, yet a similar conversation
unfolded.

Both have vision. Want to go forward. Both see opportunities in
front of them and those lurking on the horizon.

Both built powerful, profitable companies serving their people and
clients well.

But both were challenged with how to go forward to the next level
of possibility.

After merely a few questions of the type I ask routinely, it was clear
to me.

The leaders they had chosen for the first leg of their journey were not the leaders who would or could carry them to the next vista.

I ask you this today:

Are you more loyal to your vision or a single person that you placed
in a leadership role when your company was in its infancy?

Are you more loyal to your entire company, and everything that you
believe it can be for your people + clients and you, or an individual
influencing all growth decisions?

Think:
The leaders who instructed you as a child so well were most likely
not the best guides to effectively help you progress as your grew.

Your early teachers were not bad, au contraire! They were perfect.
Then.

her up. But what is the truth?

In #automotive we hire fast and ignore even
faster!

Don't believe me? Ask anyone in a retail organization if they've ever
been hired in... and the managers forgot they were even starting that
day! Or if you were working at a dealership and there was somebody
wandering around who was supposed to start and no one knew who
it was.

Dear Automotive industry friends.

Please consider eliminating the words 'Desk Manager'.

This phrase has slowly devolved into a role.

You can see it being played out with people walking straight to the
long wall of desks with a barrier to their teams, locked behind this
'wall', managing computer screens and paper, not people.

This is not helping us go forward powerfully.

Rather, it reinforces old behaviors and does not introduce or develop
skills we need for today's leaders.

Sometimes a simple thing like changing one word can change everything.

Having a progressive, intentional mindset towards inclusion of females and diversity in hiring practices should not bring fear into the minds of my good, white, professional male counterparts. Rather, it indicates a smart business mind and a culture to attract greater talent-and people with a purpose. Even if it doesn't come naturally, you can get there!

However, if you choose to lump my line of thinking and approach into a 'women first' mentality (as some have) you're sorely missing the point and the opportunity at hand.
Frankly, you're dating yourself!

Open your mind, look around, choose your language carefully and ask yourself these questions:
How inclusive is my mindset...in thought and in action?
What may I personally have to learn here?

I'm not 'women first', that even sounds silly.
I'm talent and opportunity first, for everyone.
